Tongariro National Park has everything from extreme and adventure sports, through to beautiful scenery, gentle walks in the nature of a dual World Heritage Site and some of New Zealand’s most interesting history.
National Park Village borders the dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park (Tongariro Alpine Crossing) to the east and the Whanganui National Park to the West, in the middle of a true wilderness wonderland.
The Village is located near the base of Mt Ruapehu, at the intersection of SH4 & SH47 on the volcanic plateau, half way between Auckland and Wellington.
It boasts great views of all three mountains, Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in the Lord of the Rings filming locations) and Mt. Ruapehu – a unique dual world heritage area, 300,000 years in the making.
Shuttle Transport Recommended for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Visitors are strongly recommended to not park their vehicles at either end of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing but park and ride with licensed operators from the townships nearby such as National Park Village & Whakapapa Village. The parking is very limited and vehicles parking on the access roads create difficulties with congestion and dangers on the narrow dusty roads. Our licensed operators, who are approved by the Department of Conservation, will not only provide timely shuttle transport but also provide expert safety knowledge on the walk and the weather plus free parking at their depot. They will also provide back-up should you suffer a mishap during the day.
