The Gables is New Zealand’s oldest operating restaurant, built from pit-sawn Kauri in 1847 on whalebone foundations. Back then, Russell or Kororāreka as it was known was nothing like the charming seaside town of today. Without laws Russell was dubbed ‘The Hell Hole of the Pacific’, a town full of come-ashore whalers on the hunt for rum and women.

Our food is classic; dishes are designed to showcase New Zealand and particularly the Far North’s outstanding produce. Head Chef Colin Saunders is a Northland local and keen fisherman so seasonal produce, local fish and seafood are always major features.

The Gables is available for private hire year round. We can cater for anything from a small intimate cocktail party to a large buffet wedding.
The Gables is the ideal place for special events, with a stunning waterfront location, in the beautiful Bay of Islands. The charming old building is a truly unique place for birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. With dedicated and experienced events planners, we take pride in making each event we hold memorable.
